Coral Begur
by Concep Gual
«A homage to Begur, to the Costa Brava, and to the red coral that has shaped the identity of this Mediterranean land for centuries.»
The Coral Begur collection is born from Concep Gual's deep connection with the town of Begur, in the province of Girona, and its centuries-old tradition of coral fishing. The red coral of the Costa Brava — protected today and a symbol of Mediterranean biodiversity — becomes the protagonist of large-format iron sculptures that celebrate its organic beauty and cultural significance.
These sculptures have been exhibited in Begur's public spaces, at the Begur Film Festival, and in private collections. Each piece captures the movement and vitality of coral: curved, branching forms in lacquered red iron that seem to grow and breathe.
«The red coral of the Costa Brava — a millennia-old treasure of the Mediterranean — transformed into sculpture, into permanence, into art.»
Concep Gual
A tribute to Begur and the red coral
Begur has been historically linked to coral fishing — an activity that shaped its economy, its identity, and its relationship with the sea. The red coral of the Costa Brava is today a protected species, a symbol of the richness and fragility of the Mediterranean ecosystem.
Concep Gual's sculptures pay tribute to this heritage. Crafted in lacquered iron, the coral forms grow and branch in vivid red, occupying public spaces and bringing nature back to the streets and plazas of Begur.
The collection has been featured at the Begur Film Festival (Premi Corall) and referenced by cultural institutions as an example of artistic commitment to territory and memory.
